The so-called “Anti-Nautch” campaigns stigmatized these highly educated artists as ‘immoral,’ willfully criminalizing a community that had nurtured India’s performing arts for centuries. Dewan’s narrative powerfully captures the heartbreak of this transition, detailing how women like the foster mothers Bullan and Kallan fought unjust colonial laws all the way to the Privy Council—only to lose everything.

Saba Dewan is a celebrated documentary filmmaker whose work consistently focuses on gender, sexuality, and culture. Tawaifnama is her debut book and emerged from her acclaimed documentary trilogy on stigmatized women performers: Delhi–Mumbai–Delhi (2006), Naach (2008), and The Other Song (2009). The extensive research and writing for this monumental book were supported by a prestigious fellowship from the New India Foundation. She lives in Gurgaon.
